How QTS Engages with Cedar Rapids

WHY QTS

Our commitments to Cedar Rapids

We believe how we deliver our data centers is just as important as what we deliver. For Clinton, that means taking a responsible, community‑first approach that considers local priorities, protects shared resources and contributes lasting value. Read more about our partnership with Cedar Rapids here.

Energy

We partner with local utilities to pay 100% of our own energy use so that costs related to our projects are not pushed onto ratepayers.

Water

As industry leaders in water preservation, we’re proud to save billions of gallons of water annually. Our data centers use a closed-loop system that doesn’t consume water for cooling.

Jobs

We create good-paying jobs for local residents and partner with local businesses. This includes both construction jobs during development and long‑term roles once the facility is operational, with a focus on hiring locally whenever possible.

Community Investment

Our commitment to community doesn’t stop at the data center doors. We invest in the places we call home, generating long-term tax revenue that helps fund local priorities such as schools, infrastructure and local services identified by the community.

Community Engagement

We believe in being open, honest and transparent. We will listen to your voice and share updates on our progress and work together to make decisions that matter. As plans move forward, we will share updates through this page and other community channels so residents know what to expect.

Our Cedar Rpaids Community Partners

Giving back is fundamental to QTS. We’re proud to partner with organizations that make strong communities even stronger. Together, we support the people, programs and initiatives that help the places we call home thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are committed to being a transparent partner in Cedar Rapids and neighboring communitiesAs the project moves forward, we will continue to welcome questions and share updates.

What is a data center?

A data center is a purpose-built building that stores a large amount of digital data. This data – and the applications used to create, process and share it – is housed in servers that reside within the data center. Data centers are vital hubs for businesses, governments and organizations that rely on technology.

This data center campus marks the beginning of a transformative community partnership and the largest economic development in the city’s history. With a planned $10 billion investment, the QTS Cedar Rapids data center campus represents a long-term commitment to innovation, infrastructure and regional growth.

Data centers bring large investments to the area through tax revenues, as well as construction, manufacturing and technology jobs. In Cedar Rapids, these tax revenues, at the direction of local taxing jurisdictions, will generally go towards addressing pressing issues for community members, including public works, community development programs, and education. The presence of data centers in the area will also help attract other companies to Cedar Rapids and create greater job opportunities.

The campus will span 612 acres with up to seven buildings in Big Cedar Industrial Center and is expected to support over 2,000 high-quality construction and permanent jobs.

We are committed to protecting the communities we partner with. QTS utilizes a closed-loop cooling system that cools our data centers without consuming water and saves more than 48 million gallons of water annually per data center.

Because we have eliminated the need for water consumption, our data center will not impact the area’s rivers, lakes or other water resources.

The installed dewatering sumps are standard, temporary sumps necessary to support sanitary sewer installation. These are not deep wells and do not connect to the city’s aquifer, therefore do not have any impact on the municipal water supply. At no point are all sumps operating simultaneously, and each is decommissioned once work in that area is complete. We are in full compliance with all applicable regulations and continue to work closely with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Linn County Public Health Department.

We work hard to listen to the unique needs of each community to determine the best way in which we can contribute. We are committed to providing job opportunities, fostering economic growth, working with local suppliers, and operating as trusted neighbors and responsible stewards of the environment and community resources.

We share our growth through diverse giving programs – including individual employee volunteerism and matched donations, corporate-sponsored events, grants to charitable organizations and success-based giving.
